Latter-Day Saints hold maiden Obaasema pageant

Being a virtuous woman (Obaasema) is not about beauty alone as one must possess virtues like kindness, honesty, modesty, unifier and truthfulness to get the full complement.

Dr Linda Cobbina, a lecturer at the Department of Integrated Home Economics Education, University of Education, Winneba, said all women must embrace those qualities to bring out their uniqueness as women.

Addressing a maiden Obaasema Show, organised by the Winneba District branch of the Church of Later-Day Saints at Winneba Junction, she admonished women to be ambassadors of peace in the home and society at large.

The event, on the theme: “Exploring Ghanaian Culture through Local Foods for Healthy Living,” has the objective of integrating customs and traditions into religious activities, to celebrate the holistic culture of Ghana.

It brought together members from Apam, Kojo Beedu, Winneba,  Budu One and Two, Senya, Awutu and Dabayin wards.

Dr Evelyn E. Panyin, Madam Patience Darko and Mr Michael Edumadze, lecturers at UEW were the Judges.

The contestants from the various wards, dressed in locally made attires and traditional costumes, showcased the uniquely rich culture of the first 10 regions of Ghana and exhibited their local cuisines.

Foods like epitse, mfantsenfantse, nkatsepewaa, tuo zaafi, ayoyo soup, tubaani, akple and fetri detsi, ampesi, kontomire, Ga Komi and fomfom were on display while local drinks like doka and sobolo were not left out.

Dr Cobbina said: “A Latter-Day Saint Church Woman is a beloved spirit daughter of God whose life has a meaning of purpose, direction, virtue, faith, charity, and contribute to increasing the testimony of Jesus Christ, through prayer and scripture study.”

“Ghana is a renowned nation known for its vibrant traditions and warm hospitality with diverse culinary heritage, which reflect the historical values and culture of cooking healthy and nutritious local foods.”

“Hence while we are exploring Ghana’s culture through local foods, dresses, and tradition we must remember that it is not only a delightful culinary adventure but also a gateway to healthy and nourishing lifestyle”.

For a woman to be called Obaasema of God she must constantly pray for God’s direction, study the scripture and use it in all her endeavours, Dr Cobbina said.

She commended the contestants and partners who contributed to the success of the programme for helping to promote locally made cuisines while being mindful of the hygienic environment under which they were prepared to ensure healthy living.

At the end of the programme the Apam ward contestant was crowned the overall best. She received a certificate of participation, Gas Cylinder and other souvenirs.

Each of the other contestants had certificates and a Gas Cylinder.
