Two Presbyterian Ministers Appointed to Ghana’s Judicial Council

The Government of Ghana has appointed two senior Presbyterian ministers, Rev. Dr. Joseph Kofi Antwi and Rev. Dr. Johnson Mbillah, to the Judicial Council of Ghana. The historic appointments mark the first time a Presbyterian minister has been called to serve on this high-level national legal body.

Rev. Dr. Joseph Kofi Antwi, a respected theologian and minister of the Grace West Presbyterian Church, brings to the Council a wealth of experience from both academic and ecclesiastical spheres. He currently lectures in New Testament Studies at Trinity Theological Seminary, Legon, and serves as Dean of Graduate Studies. He is also a former Clerk of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG).

Rev. Dr. Johnson Mbillah, an international figure in interfaith dialogue and Christian-Muslim relations, also joins the Council. His background includes leadership in the Programme for Christian-Muslim Relations in Africa (PROCMURA) and years of ministry across the continent.

The appointments have been widely celebrated within the Presbyterian Church and beyond. In a congratulatory message, the Moderator of the General Assembly of the PCG, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, described the recognition as a testament to the Church’s longstanding commitment to justice, national development, and moral leadership.

“The inclusion of our ministers in the Judicial Council is a call to uphold truth, fairness, and accountability at the highest levels of governance,” the Moderator stated.

The 2025 Judicial Council comprises judges, legal experts, and professionals from various sectors. It advises the President on judicial appointments and matters concerning the judiciary. Members include Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo (Chairperson), Attorney General Godfred Dame, Inspector General of Police George Dampare, and legal practitioner Mrs. Margaret Amoakohene, among others.

With their strong ethical grounding and dedication to service, Rev. Dr. Antwi and Rev. Dr. Mbillah are expected to bring valuable insight and a fresh perspective to the Council’s deliberations.
