The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Rt. Rev. Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called on the Minister for Education, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, to prioritize support for mission schools during a courtesy visit aimed at strengthening church-state collaboration in education.
The high-level engagement forms part of the Church’s broader efforts to strengthen collaboration with key national stakeholders, particularly in the field of education, where the Presbyterian Church has played a pioneering role for over a century.
Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, flanked by his deputy and other senior officials, warmly received the Moderator and his delegation. The Minister praised the Presbyterian Church for its immense contributions to education in Ghana and shared personal reflections on his own upbringing within the Presbyterian tradition in Tamale. He credited the Church for instilling in him values of discipline and academic excellence, adding that faith-based institutions remain crucial in nurturing both the moral and intellectual fabric of Ghanaian youth.

During the meeting, Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye formally invited the Minister to the upcoming 2025 Moderator’s Educational Consultation scheduled for July 23, 2025. He also presented a strong case for increased governmental support to mission schools across the country, particularly those affected by recent disasters. Highlighting the cases of Aburi and Suhum Presbyterian Senior High Schools—both hit by devastating rainstorms—the Moderator appealed for urgent intervention, including the provision of beds for a newly constructed boys’ dormitory at Aburi. He also called attention to the needs of Agona Nsabaa Presbyterian Senior High School.
Another key issue raised was the preservation of the distinct identity and heritage of faith-based schools. Rt. Rev. Dr. Opare Kwakye emphasized that mission schools play a unique role in national development and urged the Ministry to continue supporting policies that protect their values and legacy.

In response, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu expressed appreciation for the Church’s proactive engagement and assured the delegation of the Ministry’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with religious organizations to promote inclusive and quality education.
The Moderator was accompanied by key Church officials including Rev. Joshua Bossman Ohene, Acting Clerk of the General Assembly and CLAN Director; Mr. Daniel Yeboah Hienno, Director of Education and General Manager of Presbyterian Schools; Rev. Ebenezer Ahenkan Owusu, PCG Public Relations Officer; and Rev. Henry Carl Clark, Moderator’s Personal Assistant.
The meeting ended on a hopeful note, with both parties reaffirming their shared vision of a robust, value-driven education system that serves all Ghanaians.
